What to Expect to See at Willis Creek Narrows:

Willis Creek Narrows is a slot canyon in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Specifically, it is just outside of the town of Cannonville, Utah and near Bryce Canyon National Park. This canyon is a family and dog friendly hike that is not to be missed! The entrance to the canyon is right at the trailhead and goes for several miles. This allows for you to “choose your own adventure” and make the hike as long or as short as you want. (In my opinion, the best sections of the canyon are in the first 2 miles.) This hike is considered to be easy due to the relatively flat and sandy trail.

The main feature of this hike is obviously the beautiful and steep canyon walls. However, there are sections with large rock formations that are great for kids (and adults) to climb! In the early summer months you will even find wildflowers growing between the rocks. We chose to hike this canyon in the late afternoon and had the entire canyon to ourselves. It offers a great break from the crowds at Bryce Canyon and Zion and is just as impressive!

Savvy Sojourner Safety Tip: When hiking any slot canyon, make sure to check the weather forecast before you go for any rain or flash flood warnings. Slot canyons can go from dry to flooded in a matter of minutes. If rain is in the forecast or flood warnings are in effect do not hike this canyon.

What to Bring:

Never hike unprepared! A hike can be ruined, or even dangerous, if you do not have the right equipment or safety items. This is especially true if you are hiking with children. Always hike in appropriate footwear for the trail and carry a well stocked hiking pack that contains the following items:

  • Full water bottle
  • Extra water (the more the better)
  • Electrolyte mix (I prefer the Liquid IV brand)
  • Salty snacks (for example: trail mix, pretzels, jerky)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Wide brimmed hat for sun protection
  • Cell phone with full charge

How to Get to Willis Creek Narrows:

For step-by-step directions from the town of Cannonville to the trailhead visit: www.visitutah.com

Note: The majority of the road to the trailhead is dirt and covered with loose sand. A good 4WD or AWD vehicle should have no problem reaching the trailhead. Having said that, even experienced drivers should use extra caution if the road is wet or icy.

Last Minute Advice…

When it comes to hiking my number one piece of advice is to stop and enjoy where you are! Hiking is about the journey as much as it is about the destination. So make sure to look around, enjoy where you are, and soak in your surroundings! Trust me, you won’t want to miss a minute of this hike!
